Way back in June of 1931, three young school teachers set off from their homes in New Albany, Indiana for quite an adventure. Martha, Muriel (nicknamed Tud) and Anastacia turned their summer vacation into a 73 day trip across the United States.  But their travels also took them as far south as Mexico and as far north as Canada. See their route here.  The actual map they used to plot out their route can be seen below.

Martha promised to write to her family almost everyday so they wouldn't be worried.  That's a lot of letters.  One of the letters that she typed is below.

So after 10,102 miles, 7 flat tires (or puntures as they were called), one broken jack and a million memories, Martha realized that all those letters she had written along with all of her photographs needed to be placed in a scrapbook where she could relive the adventure whenever she wanted!

Do you like to travel by car?  Do you think it was easy or hard for three young women to drive across the country in 1931?
